Windows 7 Build 7601 Windows is not genuine
Hey all,
I am helping a friend fix her computer as she turned it on one day and it came up with a black background with the message "Windows 7 Build 7601 This copy of Windows is not genuine" in the bottom right hand corner. I've completed a virus scan and got rid of anything unwanted I could find. I've been scouring these forums seeing that there have been lots of people with similar issues and any help would be very much appreciated. Additionally, she is unsure of her product key, and I've attempted to 'activate windows online' but it comes up with Error Code 0x8007232B Anyway, thank you heaps for anyone who looks at this for me! I've run the Diag Tool and this is what it comes up with Code:

The installed Key is a KMS Volume License Key - which is not available to the general public.
It requires re-activation at least every 180 days at a private server owned by the License-holder. For which version and edition of Windows is the machine licensed, according to the COA sticker on the case? |

The machine is licensed to Windows Vista Basic.
She got the computer in one of the schemes whereby you buy it off the department of education whilst you're studying in school, and have full ownership once you leave, however her school never reset her copy back to Vista and has instead left Windows 7 on there. This simply could've been due to the timing running out? There were a number of viruses detected on the computer too which I thought may have been the cause |

Its almost certainly simply due to the license type.
The school was also probably in brracj of the licensing terms since Volune licences requore at least Pro as a base license - they are upgrades. You need to reformat and reinstall using vista basic ![]() |

Bummer! I was hoping against this being the case, but at the same time I had a bad feeling it might've had something to do with it.
She can still check for windows updates, etc. So if she were to keep using the system in its current state for the near future do you think it'll still be fine? Like she wont lose data/it'll still let her use the system? She's almost due for a new computer anyway, so I'm thinking it might just be easier if she dealt with the black background and the popup asking for her to authenticate if thats the only real repercussion of it? |

As far as MS is concerned you're already seeing the worst.
I can't speak for any infections. |
